Fluid coming from ear

My son had his tonsilsand adenoids removed, and they put in grommits, and even had a sinus cleanse. This happened July 2008. He now al of a sudden complained of an earache, and know there is constantly running fluid from his one ear. It is so bad that if we do not put a cotton wool in it actually runs down his neck. It does not really have a smell, but it looks like it is getting sores along the path it follows. What can be the problem? He is only 5 years old and I am reallu getting worried about him.

Dear Letitia

It is important that you take him to see his Ear, Nose and Throat Specialist as soon as possible to treat him for any medical problems with the ear. It is normal that there is a secretion when you have a grommet in, but if he complains of pain then there might be infection again or a blocked grommet. It will also be advisable to have his hearing tested by an Audiologist once all the medical problems have been ruled out.
