Q.

Smelly ear discharge

I am 53 years of age.... had a surgery 25 years ago and mastoid bone was removed.... till date there is a discharge with a smell and i clean it everyday... Doctors again advise a surgery.. I don't know what to do...please help.

Hi Kawal

Thanks for the question! It sounds like there is still evidence of infection, and you should not have to experience a purulent discharge on a daily basis.I would suggest that you consult with your ear nose and throat surgeon about what surgical options there are, there may be a perforation in your ear drum and continuous infection in the mastoid bone and middle ear which should not be left untreated.  You unfortunately run the risk of reinfection, and more infection going into the bone, which is what they probably want to avoid as much as possible.

I would also recommend a pre-operative hearing test, and then again after the operation to monitor your hearing to see whether there is any hearing loss.
