Q.

Cochlear implants

My son is hard of hearing. He has a hearing aid for his right ear. I have a medical aid that can afford to pay R100 000.00 for the operation. Could you advice us as to whether he can get the operation and what are the risks involved?

Dear Ntina

The candidacy for cochlear implants is a very involved process and decisions are made in by the parents and a whole profressional team. Have you been to see an audiologist and have you discussed the risks, benefits and candidacy with him/her.

Please let me know if you haven't seen anyone yet and i will gladly refer you (izabelle@widex.co.za). Also feel free to ask any questions that you might have relating to Cochlear implants. The first step is however to find out whether your son is a candidate or not.

Looking forward to hearing from you soon
Kind regards
