Child hearing test

A month ago I' ve realised that my 2 y 6 mth old can not hear properly. I took him for a test but he did not understand what was expected of him. He had to put blocks in a hole if he heard a peeping sound. The audiologist said this was the common test for 2 year olds. He is also quite shy so I don' t know if he knew what he had to do and was to shy or if he maybe did not hear what was expected of him. In the end we could not do the test so I still don' t know how well he can hear. She did however do a test to show that he has some liquid behind his eardrum. He has only once before had earache and is a healthy boy who has never been to a doctor or used antibiotics. It was suggested that he must go to the earspecialist and might get grommits. What do you think as he does not have a history of earinfections?

Dear Karin

If the Audiologist did measure a negative pressure in his middle ears then i would recommend that you take him to a Ear, Nose and Throat specialist and have it looked at. It is always better to be on the conservative safe side when it comes to a child's hearing. There are a number of tests that one can do to determine hearing threshold for children and if we can't test them with the use of behavioral testing then there are objective tests that can be done. Please discuss these options with your Audiologist and if it can't be performed at that practice then ask for a referral. It is extremely important to get to the root of the problem as soon as possible.
