Can diabetes affect my hearing?

I watched a special on Jackie Robinson in 2017 mentioning he was blinded when he died in 1972 from diabetes. But according to narrator Keith Jackson on this special his diabetes deafened him! Now I'm diabetic and deaf! Can deafness result from diabetes?

Hi Greg,

Unfortunately, hearing loss does occur in individuals with diabetes more commonly than those who do not have diabetes.  The link between diabetes and hearing loss is not yet very clear, however it may have something to do with damage to blood vessels due to high glucose levels in the blood. This may affect the small blood vessels supplying your inner ear.

It is also important to take into consideration other factors which may affect your hearing, such as age, history of noise exposure etc.

If you have not done so already, I would recommend seeing an Audiologist for a hearing test, to determine the extent of your hearing loss, as well as the possible management which would be appropriate for you.

Kind regards
