Terrible smell coming from sons ear

Hi, My son (10.5yrs old) He swam on Saturday and Sunday he had this horrible smell coming from his ear. He claims not to have any pain, he possibly has a high threshold for pain. He has been prone to getting a sore in his ear over the past few months which usually results in so much pain that he cries. Im not sure the fact that he doesnt have pain its kinda throwing me off so Im not sure what to do. Please provide guidance. Thanks

Hi there

Most fluid buildup in the ears are asymptomatic (which means it is not accompanied by pain or fever).  This doesnt mean that there is no problem, but just that the fluid build up is not infected, but needs to be resolved either with treatment or by being drained.

I would take him to your ENT to check up whether there is an infection, or whether drainage is required.
