Dear Maureen. These are very terrible symtoms and yes true vertigo which is an illusion of movement although you are keeping still can definetly be symptom of  a disorder in your inner ear specifically the balance organs of the inner ear. This is the vestibular system. The causes can be multiple BUT you must go and see and ear specialist as soon as possible.  Diagnosis by the dr is very often made during the time of the bad "attacks". That medication will help for the nausea and vomiting but will only treat the symptoms. Ask you GP for an referral if needed and ask the secretary of the ear specialist if he sees and treat vertigo patients since this is not everybodies speciality.  Best of luck. I know the feeling. Any ear ralated symptoms such as loss of hearing or dull or full feeling in ear or senstivity towards loud sounds or ringing in ear?????
