Sorry for the delay Frank, but several questions only appeared now on my profile.  You do not have to clean your ears.  Earwax is very important.  It lubricates the very thin skin in the outer part of the ear canal and will "catch" flying or crawling insects from entering the deeper part of the canal.  Use a facecloth to clean the opening of the ear canal but do not go deeper than that.  Many adults do like to scratch in their ear canals and use earbuds and this can cause infection and pushing wax deeper in.  I personally do not like syringing of ears but prefer that it is removed with instruments which most audiologists are trained to do or definitely an Ear specialist especially if it is a young child who does not sit still for long during such delicate procedure.
