Q.

Macular degeneration

Does macular dengeneration have anything to do with hearing loss? My mother has both and wants to know if one can cause hearing and eye problems

Hi there

No, the two are not connected unless there is a more central cause of nerves being affected - in which case any or multiple nerves in the central nervous system can be affected as a result of the cause.  Macular degeneration is often a result of age, and there is also a hearing loss called "presbycusis" which is an age-related hearing loss.

They are probably two separate issues, but I would recommend that she has her hearing assessed and to begin using hearing aids as early as possible, as she may not be able to use many visual cues in the future, and ensuring good hearing will allow her much better quality of life.
