Q.

I have herpes and fear getting HIV

I have genital herpes and my lesions have healed completely .. if in the future if I have protected sex with condoms in the absence of active lesions with a person whose hiv status I don't know so is there a risk of contracting hiv ?? I've heard herpes makes it easy for hiv to enter the body.. I've read a research which says active lesions of herpes increases the risk of hiv by 4 times as sores makes it easier for hiv to enter the body easily.. I've also read a research which says that there's no need of open sores for hiv transmission as it can penetrate skin which has previously been healed from herpes because the skin has high amounts of macrophages and cd4 cells concentrated there .. this is really freaking me out .. has there been any confirmed case of hiv in the said circumstances where a person used a condom but got hiv because of herpes?

Active genital herpes and/or any other sexually transmitted infection does place you at a higher risk of HIV infection. Remember that the virus likes exposed mucous membranes. This is the reason we treat STIs aggressively - to reduce the risk of HIV infection. If the genital herpes has healed it means the skin is intact. The risk of infection is reduced. If you use a condom the risk of infection is further reduced
