Q.

Flu virus in Johannesburg

My Granddaughter came home from Playschool on Thursday not feeling very well. She was taken to a Doctor and after having medicines prescribed for Upper Respiratory Infection, she was feeling well enough to attend school on Friday. Today is Saturday and I have also been attacked by whatever Virus is out there. How is this Virus passed on and if a staff member was off ill with Tonsillitis, as she explained it, could she have passed the Virus on to me. I'm sure she had Flu as she was coughing and sneezing, not just complaining of a sore throat. I found her sucking milk out of the little girl's bottle a few months ago, testing the temperature!! What can she be passing onto my family and myself if she lives in an environment where Flu seems to be evident throughout the year as well as other dangerous Viruses?.

Hi there

Viruses are, unfortunately, extremely easy to pass on from one person to the other and yes, the staff member probably had flu or a cold and not only tonsillitis. I hope that you raised the issue of her sucking milk from the little girl's bottle - this is absolutely unacceptable and a major health risk. Good luck and I hope that you feel better soon.
