Water hazards

If you have a swimming pool, you probably take precautions to protect your children from drowning. But the American Academy of Pediatrics says children are at risk - even in homes without pools - because it only takes 4cm of water to pose a danger.

Besides bathtubs, the group warns of the dangers of buckets, pails (even diaper pails), toilets, ice chests, whirlpools, hot tubs, fountains, fish ponds, irrigation ditches and wells.

The academy says locked covers can be purchased for hot tubs, buckets and chests should be emptied, and kids should be kept out of the bathroom except when with an adult.
