What is the purpose of the scary-looking mask, which is visible in pictures of London victims?
The special carrier material contains scientifically formulated gel, which together make up the face mask. These products are issued to emergency crews so they can provide immediate relief of facial burns in victims.
When applied to a burn, the mask:
- Immediately cools the skin
- Eases the pain (which can be severe)
- Stabilises skin temperature
- Helps calm the victim
- Protects covered wounds from further contamination
It may be used on all types of burns. It is water-soluble, which facilitates the removal of burnt clothing. It won't harm skin or eyes.
