Spokesman Johnny Johnson said absenteeism due to diabetes (of both types I and II) was responsible for 168 incidents of absenteeism and 578 days overall in the period September 2006 to September 2007 in more than 60 South African companies.
"The total incidents of all sick absenteeism recorded in this sample for this period was 1 4824. These figures show that diabetes accounts for approximately 1.13 per cent of all sick absenteeism in South African companies," said Johnson.
Diabetes nursing specialist Sister Sheradin Williamson said patients "are not encouraged to take time off due to diabetes but are rather taught to manage their diabetes in the workplace environment.
"Cases of high or low sugar in diabetes sufferers can be controlled in a work environment without any problem." – (Sapa)
