i have been experiencing extreme fatigue, nausea, dry mouth, headaches that come and go, burning feet and I always feel hungry even after eating. After eating lunch I cant keep my eyes open I have to lie down and sleep. I feel so exhauseted. When I wake up im still tired. Im also finding it difficult waking in the mornings and I was always a 5am jump up and go person. I speed walk/run in mornings and lately I cant run because my legs feel so weak and I just havent the energy. I wear eading glasses and I noticed my eyesight has worsened. Im a 45yr female, 50kg and vegetarian. I eat a very healthy diet, opting for fat free or low fat. I do have hypertension and im on meds for it. My father had diabetes 1. He was diagnosed at 28 and he died at 32. Do u perhaps think i might have diabetes? I will have to see a doctor soon as Im not feeling well at all.

Dear K
To diagnose diabetes one requires a fasting glucose(done following an overnight fast of 8 hours) of 7 or over with associated symptoms of tiredness, drinking lots of water and passing lots of urine or blurred vision, or alternatively a random glucose reading of 11,1 or more with the same symptoms. If there are no symptoms, then one would require a repeat value above the aforementioned cut-offs. From a risk point of view your only risk appears to be hypertension, as your father was a type 1 diabetic. You don’t give me your height, but based on your weight suspect you are not overweight. It is worth doing a glucose test, although you don’t have classic symptoms for diabetes, either type 1 or 2. As an aside I would suggest checking your iron in view of your vegetarian status, and also a B12.
