Q.

Am I perhaps heading for diabetes?

63 yrs old, 53 kg''s, female, non smoker.
Lately my mouth is always dry, drinking water doesnt really help. Am always applying lip ice too. Yesterday went out for a meal - and I noticed i was the last one to finish, seem to having difficulty in swallowing. also have post nasal drip. Went for a check up at the beg. of the year - all o.k.
Please advise what to do

Dear Ann
Dry mouth is only a symptom of diabetes if accompanied by excessive thirst and passing large amounts of urine. To rule out diabetes though, a fasting glucose test would do, but if this is normal then you would need to have other causes of dry mouth looked at like medications, autoimmune causes etc. The very recent difficulty swallowing may be related to the post nasal drip, and hence would treat that first before entertaining other causes.

THANK YOU FOR YOUR COMMENTS!
I am going to go for blood tests today, so hopefully will get some answers there - would also like to mention that i have been taking sleeping pills for the last year and a half " Adco Zolpidem"  - could they perhaps be a problem? How do I treat the post nasal drip?
