Q.

What does my fasting insulin level mean?

I have not been diagnosed with diabetes but recently my doctor had me take a fasting insulin blood test. The results came back with a 24.7. It was on the portal that I can log into to see my results and I can't get a hold of the doctors office for a few days. What does this mean?

Hi

A fasting insulin level is not very useful, and doesn't really tell one much. It may be an indicator of insulin resistance, but it isn't the ideal test. The ideal test is a complex test done using an insulin and glucose infusions. The likely cause of a raised insulin is being overweight, and the clinical features of this are skin tags around the neck and upper body or acanthosis(darkness around the neck). Insulin resistance can be improved with weight loss, and is not a cause for weight gain
