Type 1 Diabetic Partner worried about having a baby

Hi there Dr. My partner is Type 1 diabetic - he is now 26 and was diagnosed when he was 21. I have spoken to him about wanting to fall pregnant and he is really worried about the baby getting Diabetes or passing the jean on basically. Are there any tests I could do before hand or during just to make sure that the baby is still ok or is there a diet which could help maybe? Thank you and I hope you have a lovely day :)

Hi

There is a small risk (8-9%) of the baby one day developing diabetes, and it wouldn't be enough of a concern for you to not try and have children. Type 1 as opposed to Type 2 doesn't have a very strong genetic risk in terms of passing the genes on. There are no tests that one can do beforehand or during pregnancy, or any diets that have been shown to reduce the risk. From your side, as the mother, maintaining a good pregnancy weight, as opposed to excessive weight gain, will help reduce risk
