Q.

Hi Doc what is a normal insulin level.

Mine is 30. The docter put me on 2000mg glucophage a day. My sugar lever is 4.5. I weigh 100kg and is 1.65 m.I try to do exercise everyday.

Hi

A normal insulin level is usually less than 10.4. Insulin resistance is an early stage of progression to diabetes, and is very much driven by increasing weight. The best option to improve insulin resistance is therefore to lose weight by modifying diet and exercise. With regards to diet, there are a few options and these include a low fat diet, low carb (difficult to do long term) diet or Mediterranean diet. This would address the quality issue, but to help further to lose weight, you need to lower the quantity as well, as the best way to reduce weight is to cut down on total calories, more so than the type of calories, for your body can only burn so many calories a day, and if you eat less than this, then weight loss will occur.  Exercise requirements for weight loss are a lot and entail about 60-90 minutes every day. Exercise less than this amount will help you live longer regardless of weight loss and will also help with insulin resistance. The diet with a slightly better edge in terms of insulin resistance would be the Mediterranean diet. Essentially this would mean more monounsaturated fats which you could get in your diet by eating 5-7 almond nuts a day and adding olive oil where possible.Glucophage is a medication that can help with insulin resistance, and can delay progression to diabetes, but will not have a marked effect on weight loss
