Q.

Diabetes

Goeie dag Dr. My seuntjie se ouma is 'n diabeet. Haar ma was ook 'n diabeet. Enige iets waarvoor ek moet uitkyk? Raad sal baie waardeer word. dankie

Hi

It sounds like there is a history of type 2 diabetes on the father's side, which means that your son is at higher risk, but this can't be quantified, as there are to many factors to consider(his weight throughout his life, his activity levels and dietary choices etc). He is to young to test, and as he gets older he should(we all should) focus on maintaining appropriate an weight, exercise and good dietary choices. Testing would only happen, if he has symptoms like tiredness, weight loss, drinking lots of water and passing too much urine, which I would expect at his current age.
