Q.

Antidepressant best for menopause

I am 56yo female and been on LA30mg Ritalin for years. I am also on the pill Levelen to cope with mood swings. I have recently developed anxiety and depression and been in psychological therapy for a few months that has helped but psychologist says an antidepressant would be best at this point. Which ones are best with Ritalin and avoiding weight gain? Thanks

Hello Elizabeth,
I'm puzzled by the medication you are on.  You haven't revealed the diagnoses that have been made, or what sort of doc is treating you with these drugs. Usually, one doesn't prescribe Ritalin for someone in their 50's ; and one doesn't usually need to prescribe a contraceptive like Levlen, to someone of 56, either for the usual reasons, or to deal with mood swings. It's probably more likely to cause mood disturbances than to cure them, and is often implicated in precipitating anxiety and depression.
I agree with your psychologist that a proper antidepressant may be useful ; you : but I think you need to see a good local psychiatrist ( or, if you are already seeing a psychiatrist, then to see a new person, for a fresh, second opinion )  for a full re-assessment of all your problems, a fresh diagnosis and a frank discussion of your treatment options.
There's no specific AD one would recommend for combining with Ritalin, especially as it's not certain whether you need to remain on Ritalin.
