Q.

Espiride to help with side affects

Hi there, I have been tapering my doses of Venlor over the last 8 months but reached the lowest dose of 37.5mg venlafaxine. My doctor has advised that I can stop altogether now, which is great news. I am also taking Trazodone and have been advised to continue with that until I'm settled. He has prescribed Espiride 50mg and Indoblok 40mg to help alleviate the worst of the symptoms by taking as and when needed until the Venlafaxine has cleared my system. I have just been reading other people's experiences of Espiride, and though their circumstances were very different from mine, I would be grateful for your view on this course of treatment. Thank you for your time.

Hello Eve,
Indoblok is a trade name for the beta blocker Propranolol, which can be used to control some of the physical symptoms of anxiety, if these are a special problem.  Usually, venlafaxine withdrawal is not a serious problem, nor especially long-lasting.
Sulpiride is an antipsychotic drug, used to treat schizophrenia, but very peculiarly popular in South Africa for treating anxiety and depression, though I have never found good evidence to support this, and have never recommended the drug myself.  But some doctors, especially GPs, seem to swear by it and I'm sure your own doctor can explain his reasoning behind adding this to your meds
