Vascular dementia is a type of dementia that is associated with hypertension, high cholesterol, strokes and diabetes. The blood supply to the brain is compromised and this causes small and larger strokes.
A characteristic stepwise deterioration is present. Upon having a stroke, the person will deteriorate and improve thereafter. However, the improvement will not be hundred per cent and a residual deficit will remain. The next stroke will cause further deterioration and so on.
