Q.

Ovary pain, gassy stomach and irregular periods.

I am a 16 year old girl that has been feeling ovarian pain for quite a while now. I got my period at around the age of 12 and had them regularly for like a year. But around from the age of 13 to now they’ve been irregular ever since. I also experience irregular bowel movements such as constipation and sometime diarrhea. Also, sometimes going to the bathroom to poop might be painful for ovaries but no burning sensation when peeing. After eating i also usually experience heartburn and a gassy sensation, sometime with nausea. Lower back pain on sides occurs sometimes as well. I recently did a blood test to just check my overall health and everything was fine except a slight increase of high cholesterol. I do have anxiety as well and don't know if that can be the cause for these symptoms. But I'm worried this could be a sign of something serious with the ovaries maybe? Should i see a gynecologist? I'm not sexually active so what should i do?

Dear Anna, monthly periods is part of puberty for teenage girls – some, however, suffer more than others with pain, heavy bleeding, or experience irregular cycles, particularly in the first few years of menstruation. It would seem that you are one of this unfortunate group of young women. I would suggest that you first have an open and frank discussion with your doctor about your problem – and if necessary, let him/her refer you to a gynaecologist with experience in dealing with teenage menstrual problems. I wish to congratulate you on not being sexually active – something which you can be very proud of. Keep this up! Your current problems are not insurmountable. (MCH).
