Q.

How thorough should a full body skin check be?

I go every year. I read an article that said skin cancer can occur even on skin that isn't exposed to sun and that dermatologists should be examining your entire body - even your genitals and anus! How can I ask my female dermatologist to be more thorough without seeming like a pervert (I'm a male)? I know it will be a bit awkward but I'd rather be fully naked an embarrassed for a couple minutes than have skin cancer not found early on.

Dear Anonymous

Thank you for a very important question. It is true that skin cancer (especially melanoma) may be found on areas of the body not exposed to the sun. You should not be embarrassed to ask your dermatologist (a lady) for a thorough skin examination. She is a well qualified specialist and will know exactly how to conduct a thorough skin examination without causing you any embarrassment. At the commencement of your consultation with her, you could tell her about the article which you have read. She will know how to deal with this. (MCH).
