Q.

Are there Betanoid alternatives?

My father in law has a brain tumour, he has been prescribed betanoid to keep it in check. we have enough left for 4 days and were informed at our pharmacist that they are out of stock. on further investigation it seems there's a nationwide shortage. I'm desperately trying to find out if there's an alternative if we cannot find betanoid?

Dear Jeani, the best advice is to contact your father in law's treating physician to make inquiries regarding an alternative to "betanoid". Another approach could be to contact The South African Health Products Regulatory Authority (SAHPRA) to inquire about shortages or unavailability. SAHPRA can be contacted:

South African Health Products Regulatory Authority, Department of Health, Civitas Building,
42 Thabo Sehume Street (formerly Andries), Pretoria
Postal: Private Bag x 828, Pretoria, 0001
Tel: 012 395 9133
