There are a number of factors that affect the dilatation or relaxation of the airways.  For example, the airways can constrict or become narrower due to exposure to cold, allergens, certain types of medication, etc.  One of the things that causes airways to narrow is a reduction in the internal production of natural steroids within the body.  The production of these steroids, usually produced by the adrenal gland found next to the kidneys, is lowest late at night and in the early hours of the morning.  Therefore, asthmatic symptoms are thought to be more common during this period.  However, more importantly, shortness of breath during this period reflects poor asthma control and this means that you should see your doctor about adjusting your medication or looking into why this might be happening.
