Q.

Asthma Medication

I've been asthmastic my whole life ( 41 years) I do find that in winter when i get a bad cold / flu I battle terrible with asthma. 2 weeks ago I was at casualites as I could not breath. I've been using venteze for as long as I can rememeber. I cannot use ventolin it closes up my chest. When leaving casualties I was given 2 new pumps to use one being Beclate. When I use it my chest closes up! Now with me having a panic / anxiety disorder I freak out every time I have to use my pump - as I was told that using a pump a lot can damage my heart ? Is this true ? I was nebulized at hospital and sent home with my new pumps as well as 5 mg prednisone which cause me to have a panic attach. I was told to take 8 tablets once a day. Do I need to see a asthmatic dr / specialist ? Its been over a month and I am still battling to breath. I have to use my pump 2 / 3 times a day every day. When I got my new pumps I was asked if I was using my pump correctly??? Erm ... yes I think I know how to use my pumps. Its when I get really sick they dont work properly

Yes, you need to see a pulmonologist or asthma specialist. It is very important you take your anti-inflammatory treatment and prednisone as directed as the risks from a severe asthma attack far outweigh any concerns about damaging your heart. Obviously, I'm not familiar with your broader medical situation. Asthma medication can increase the heart rate but there's no danger of long-term damage. It is important that your specialist check that you are using the pumps properly. It's also important that you use it regularly and as directed. Clearly you have poorly controlled asthma and need urgent assistance with your management.
