Osteoarthritis or degenerative joint disease is a condition caused by the deterioration of the cartilage and bone that makes up the affected joints. The symptoms of osteoarthritis are joint pain and stiffness.
There are many causes of osteoarthritis, including joint injury, genetic factors and jobs that entail chronic joint stress. Treatment is focused on pain management and includes medication, exercise and techniques and tools to reduce the stress on joints.
Professor Asgar Ali Kalla completed his MBChB (Bachelor of Medicine and Bachelor of Surgery) degree in 1975 at the University of Cape Town and his FRCP in 2003 in London.
Professor Ali Kalla is the Isaac Albow Chair of Rheumatology at the University of Cape Town and also the Head of Division of Rheumatology at Groote Schuur Hospital.
