Doctors performed a stomach reduction through a patient's mouth, removing 20% of the stomach. It's the first time this type of surgery has been done in the US.

Doctors who performed a stomach reduction through a patient's mouth say it's the first time this type of surgery has been done in the United States.

"The number of options for minimally invasive weight-loss surgery is rapidly evolving. Our goal is to offer patients a customised long-term solution for losing weight with as few scars as possible, and if desired, no medical devices," Dr Santiago Horgan, chief of minimally invasive surgery and director of the UCSD Centre for the Treatment of Obesity, said in a university news release.
