Shingles is a painful unsightly skin condition caused by the Herpes Zoster virus. There is no harm in applying antiseptic ointment to Shingles lesions to prevent any secondary bacterial infection.  However, Zovirax (Acyclovir) cream is the recommended anti-viral treatment of choice. The earlier this is used with an outbreak, the more effective it is.
