Dear Erika,
Children with ADD can attend mainstream schools provided the teachers and principal understand all the ins and outs of the disorder. Seating the child in the front of the class and allowing frequent breaks are examples of techniques used in the mainstream classroom to ensure maximum concentration. Other options would be certain remedial schools or home schools where classes tend to be smaller and more individualised attention can be provided. ADHASA (Attention Deficit and Hyperactivity Support Group of SA) may have a list of schools that have been recommended by fellow parents. They can be contacted at www.adhasa.co.za or on (011) 888 7655.
All the best,
Delia
