pulling at hair

I am a 32yr old female with 3 kids. My problem is when i become stressed or nervous i tend to pull strands of my hair and shake my head as (nervous tick). This also happens when i have to concentrate on anything, i have this sudden movement of my and a twitch to my nose. I know this may sound really silly, but i am too embarrassed to go to a doctor. Please help.

Dear Naz,
A 'tick' as you describe it may be a habit. Is this something you have always done, or can you relate it to a point in your life where something significant perhaps happened? You could try to replace pulling at your hair with a different behaviour you find less embarrassing. It will be difficult to change and would require a conscious thought to do something different; easier said than done when you are in a stressful moment I know.
There is the possibility that this is not just a habit and may be something like Tourettes (although I cannot say with the information you have provided), in which case you would need to visit your GP and explain your concerns. There is no need to feel embarrassed going to your doctor with a query like this. S/he knows your medical history and is therefore in a much better position to put your mind at ease.
