Hi there Delia,

What are the signs of ADD in a 3year old?

My brother''s daugther came to visit us for the week and se seems to be quite hyperactive, she cant seem to sit still long enough to colour a picture is very easy distracted.
Her parents are on a low income, so can the signs be detected so early and what can be done by parents to try to better this?

Dear Nadine,

The behaviours you have described could be indicative of ADHD provided they are present in a variety of situations such as home, play group, a restaurant etc. Furthermore, for a diagnosis of ADHD, these symptoms must interfere with her daily living and learning.

If she has reached her milestones and is speaking appropriately for her age, instilling some boundaries and positive reinforcement as well as providing a lot of exercise to dispel her energy, may help. Omega's also assist with concentration - the dosage will need to be discussed with her pediatrician or pharmacist as she is so young.

Best wishes,
