Adult ADHD

Hi, I am 36 and have been diagnosed with ADHD last year. I have improved a lot on Concerta, but still make a some careless mistakes. I have a job that requires great attention to detail and I have noticed that I make more mistakes when I am under pressure or when the enviroment is very noisy. I am on 36mg. Will I benefit from an increase in dose as my Psychiatrist suggested? Or will I always have this problem that I can' t pay attention to detail? Is this part of the ADHD or is it just part of my personality.The mistakes are causing a lot of anxiety.

Increases in stress and noise are typical triggers for poor concentration - even in people without ADHD. Concerta can help balance the neurotransmitters in your brain and a higher dose may well be required; remember that the optimum dose is different for everyone and finding it can take some time. Did the mistakes cause anxiety prior to starting Concerta? Anxiety is a known side effect of Concerta or may be exacerbated by it; these side effects often pass shortly. It would be beneficial to discuss the anxiety with you psychiatrist; try to note which situations bring it on, the people you are with, if it is only work related or in social settings as well etc. The more information you can provide him/her, the more s/he will be able to determine the best course of action. Paying closer attention to your diet and exercise regime as Eric suggested are very good tips as your body influences your mind as much as your mind influences your body. It may also be beneficial to look into some relaxation techniques to implement when you are beginning to feel anxious. Taking short breaks to move around can also help you to refocus your attention.

I am on 54mg Concerta and take 10mg Ritalin when I wake up in the morning. This seems optimal for me but I still get distracted. The best would be to start doing exercise as this helps in a big way. Also study as much as you can  this helps manage it. Dr Ned Hallowell books are very good.
