Township mutts strut their stuff

Almost a hundred 'township specials' took to the show ring for the seventh uMngeni SPCA / Hill’s Township Dog Show, one of the biggest dog shows of its kind in South Africa. The event was held in Lidgetton in KwaZulu-Natal on Sunday 18 April 2010.

Jenny Henschel of Hill's Pet Nutritionsaid it was a great success, "This was one of the best shows we've had, with lovely weather, enthusiastic owners and some really gorgeous, healthy entrants. Choosing the winners was a real challenge for the judges."

Organiser and dog trainer Adrienne Olivier was delighted with the turn out: "We had over 90 entrants and many interested spectators and supporters from the local community. Lidgetton is a small, poor rural township with high unemployment, so it was especially encouraging to see a marked improvement in the general condition of the dogs since the Show was last held there in 2007. This is a positive sign that the outreach work of the uMngeni SPCA is making a difference in that area.

"The displays by two dog training teams – one from Bruntville and Funda Nenjafrom Mpophomeni - were well received. We had a request from some of the Lidgetton owners for us to start obedience classes in their area too, which we hope to do one day when our resources permit."

Contenders walked kilometers to be there

Unlike traditional dog shows - where the entrants usually arrive by car, primped to perfection – some of the contenders at the uMngeni SPCA / Hill's Township Dog Show walked several kilometres to attend. Before entering the show ring each dog was given a thorough health check, de-wormed, vaccinated against rabies, dipped and given a new collar and lead.

The judges were looking for healthy, well-cared for animals that clearly had a loving relationship with their owner. The top three entrants in each class were awarded rosettes, a certificate and Hill's food. Jack, the Best in Show, also won a cosy kennel donated by loyal supporter Howick Cabins.
