Be safe at sea

Before you set foot in the sea this summer, make sure you know how to avoid venomous marine animals. Bluebottles, jellyfish and sea anemones can sting, sea urchins, starfish and sea cucumbers should rather be avoided, and sea snakes are extremely venomous. All of these can be found in our seawaters.

Take action: Check beforehand where the nearest doctor or hospital is; always be an alert swimmer; wear lightweight protective clothing, a wetsuit or a layer of petroleum jelly spread on bare skin when you go swimming to protect against stings; wear a pair of slipslops when you swim in a rocky area to protect your feet; and wear protective gloves to protect your hands when you go searching for sea delicacies, like mussels or abalone, among rocks.
