Emotional development - the 60s

The world is geared toward young folk. Marketing and advertising targets them constantly as the decision makers and the ones with the cash or plastic to burn. Yet the sexiest man on the planet is Sean Connery. That should be music to your ears. It means you can enjoy a fulfilling life without needing a pierced bellybutton, acne and dandruff.

Generally you will find that your emotional state does not change radically as you grow older. If you have always been socially active and involved in a large number of activities, it shouldn't change when you retire. It is important to remain involved in the things you enjoy.

If your life has undergone several radical changes, it is quite normal to feel depressed. Watch out though, if this is the way you begin to feel most of the time, you may be suffering from depression, which is a treatable condition. Between therapy and medication, this could be sorted out fairly quickly. You don't have to feel like a misery.

People are important and you need to take trouble over those friendships and family connections that you value. It is important to remain socially active, whether you are part of a couple, whether you are single, divorced or widowed. The number of invitations you receive, are usually closely linked to the number of invitations you give out.

This is also the time of your life in which you have the time to get involved in the things you wanted to do earlier in your life, but for which there was no time. Hobbies, sport, societies, book clubs, hiking – the list is long. Make your choice and get involved.

Use technology to enhance your life. E-mail can keep you in touch with your children and grandchildren Internet banking and online shopping can free you up from chores, allowing you to pursue healthy, fulfilling interests.

Many older people feel isolated and lonely, especially if a spouse has died. But you’re now at the stage of your life where you have more to offer than ever before. Japanese corporations appoint people your age as CEOs, rather than putting them out to pasture. So do something with your time, whether it’s volunteer work or some part-time tutoring. Keep busy and keep involved. Especially with your grandchildren if you have any. This time round, the final responsibility belongs to someone else and you can just have fun with them. Remember that other people can benefit from your experience and knowledge.
