Garnier Pure Active Blackhead Scrub, R77.99

Reviewer: Wimpie Engelbrecht, construction project manager

I've used this product for three weeks. I was very impressed with the results - no more blackheads for the first time! It has a soft and creamy consistency, but contains lots of tiny exfoliating microbeads, which, in combination with an active ingredient called salicyclic acid, are really effective in combating spots and blackheads. The cooling sensation when you apply this product to your face is an amazing feeling. And what's more, you can use it daily without drying out the skin. I also loved the smell.

Everysun Aquasport Sunscreen Lotion SPF 30, R78.50 for 125ml

Reviewer: Will Stone, sales person

The Everysun Aquasport Sunscreen Lotion SPF30 passed all of the tests I threw at it with flying colours. I wore it to the beach on a 30oC Cape Town day and came back without even a little sunburn. This was despite hectic swimming and even a little surfing – which will rinse off most other sun lotions. The lotion rubs right into the skin, doesn’t leave white lines or marks and isn’t sticky at all. This water and sweat resistant sun cream contains anti-oxidants for a healthy looking skin as well as added UVA filters to protect you against the suns more harmful rays. A great and essential product for anyone who spends a lot of time in the water.

Environ Men Daily Moisturiser, R320.00
Reviewer: Philip Langley, web designer

In ages past, men would sail to foreign lands for a chance at finding youth. Now however, thank God we can just drop by the store and get some Environ moisturizer. After what felt like using asbestos paste on my face for years, I can now say I have joined the modern era. Being a designer, the first thing I noticed is the classy green packaging-bold without going into cheesy, butch Brut territory. Then comes the scent. Rich sweet liquorice tickles your brain while the smooth and slightly tacky cream disappears into your skin in a flash. After taking a few days for my skin to get used to it, I was left looking like I had stepped out of a spa. Natural skin has a glowing sheen to it, a quality hard to achieve without many years of healthy living. Thank the Gods I can skip all that tedious exercise and cheat by using Environ...

Boss Age Defense Skin Serum, R390.00
Reviewer: Bryan Porter, Manager, GoTravel24

With a brushed-steel look and gun-metal grey container, Boss Age Defense Skin Serum has simple, classic and very masculine packaging. The container is contoured for grip, with a pump action depressor, releasing just enough serum for each application. The product is smooth, almost pearl-like to the touch, opaque with a clean, slightly citrusy smell, but not too fragrant. It is easily absorbed by the skin, leaving no sticky residue and spreads smoothly over a shaved face. It immediately left my face feeling smooth, thoroughly moisturised and fresh for several hours after use. After two weeks’ application there are no miracles, although my pores appear smaller and my face is smooth without any blotchiness caused by winter dryness. I reckon it’s a good addition to any metro-man’s daily routine.

Boss Skin Face Wash, R195.00
Reviewer: Petrus le Roux, geochemist

The stylish, understated packaging of the Boss Skin Face Wash sets the right tone for this product. Without much fuss, it does the job and does it well. The container is easy to stand, handle and use in the shower. The twist-opening cap allows controlled dispensing of the clear gel. The gel lathers instantly, with a fresh, masculine fragrance and application is trouble-free. Let’s face it, washing your face isn’t exactly rocket-science. Rinsing is quick and clean, with no lingering slow-to-move suds to slide into your eye when you think you’re done. The result is a fresh and clean face, without the common dry and tight skin after-effects. After a few weeks use my face is noticeably clearer and, dare I say, fresher.

L’Oreal Men Expert Pure & Matte Deep Exfoliating Gel Wash, R89.95
Reviewer: Rob Houwing, Sport24 chief writer

I used to think exfoliation was a grunge group. Then I learnt that it really meant washing your face - and more importantly washing it, um, properly. So that meant dispensing with my old student way of reaching for the nearest, ubiquitous slab of hand soap to do the job: fatal in my case, given that I have sensitive skin and was probably doing the kind of cumulative damage akin to chain-smoking. This product has a genuinely pleasing texture for my needs - the exfoliating micro-beads are not so delicate as to evaporate in my hands even before they’ve reached my nose, but nor are they overly chunky and abrasive and likely to cause irksome inflammation. Dead skin cells quickly get the back-door treatment. I find I can apply it morning and night with warm water to leave my skin feeling calm, smooth and suitably irritation-free. The active defence system touted on the back of the deftly-packaged tube (it stands sturdily and effortlessly on the lid, which I like) helps shield your skin from “daily aggressions”. Certainly no-one has kicked sand in my face since my discovery of this gel wash.

Garnier Pure Active Spot Fighting 24hr Moisturiser, R79.95
Reviewer: Sipho Matiwane, graphic design student

I haven’t ever used a moisturiser before in my life. It always seemed a bit too metro-sexual for me, but after giving this Garnier product a try recently, I don’t think I’ll be starting my days without it in the future. I guess you could say I have temperamental skin. On some days my face seems spotlessly smooth and 24 hours later it’ll break out into an irritable and blotchy mess. Garnier Pure Active has really made a difference in giving me soft and spotless skin all of the time. A tiny little drop spreads nicely across my entire face and leaves it feeling fresh and invigorated. The small blue dispenser delivers just enough for one application. According to the package this moisturiser contains salicyclic acid and something called “HerbaSoothe”. Well, whatever it is that the good people at Garnier have put into this, it sure works for me and my skin. A big thumbs up!

Vichy Homme Purifying Cleansing Gel, R165.00
Reviewer: Frank Sander, Creative Director, Be Frank - New Media Agency

“Does it really make a difference?” I asked myself before testing this new cleansing gel from Vichy Homme. Having travelled through life without one of these for many years, I was sceptical. But now, I don’t want to miss a day without it. Apply a small, walnut sized amount of this summery-smelling gel, rinse it off with some water and you feel an immediate freshness and readiness to start the day. The deep-cleansing effect makes you feel “PURE”, not just superficially on the outside of your skin, but deep down - a feeling that stays with you throughout the day. No car pollution, corrosive wind-blown dust or your boss’ bad karma will be able to challenge it. Even for sensitive skin this gel works like a charm. This product contains Vichy thermal spa water and its rare minerals and unique fortifying and soothing qualities will agree with even the most sensitive skin. It can be used in the mornings and/or evenings and the gentle softness of your skin will not only please you but your partner, too. But that’s a story for another day/night…

Tropitone Acti-Sport Sunscreen Lotion SPF 30, R68.99 for 125ml
Reviewer: Ben Stevens, insurance broker

I have fair skin that burns to a crisp at the sight of a torch, so I really need a good sunscreen whenever I head outdoors. I also spend a lot of time in the water - kite-surfing is my passion - so I can afford a sun block that washes off my skin when confronted with spray and waves. Tropitone Active-Sport does a great job on both counts. It has a sun protection factor (SPF) of 30 and is water resistant. What I particularly liked about this product is its consistency: it’s thick and creamy and I can actually feel it creating a protective barrier on my skin. At the same time it’s not oily at all and has an unobtrusively pleasant scent.

Everysun Aquasport Lip Balm SPF 30, R25.99 for 10ml
Reviewer: Oliver Coetzer, musician

You know how irritating it is when you’re out and about on a hot, dry day and you open your lip balm only to find it’s melted down into a useless, gooey mess? Well, those days are over thanks to Everysun Aquasport water resistant lip balm. That’s because it’s a moisturising cream-gel packaged in a nifty screw-top tube - as opposed to a potentially messy stick. Also, thanks to the tube’s angled head, it’s easy to squeeze the product out and apply it directly to your lips - to offer them instant soothing relief and sun protection that won’t wash off! As always, real power seems to come in small packages...
