Research has found a stronger link between skin cancer and exposure to UVA in sunlight than previously thought, leading to updated international standards for sunscreen.

By April 2013, sunscreen sold in South Africa complying with these standards will carry a new CANSA SunSmart Choice Seal.

Meanwhile, the following sunscreens are already compliant with the new standards:

Ambre Solaire, BioSun, Eucerin Sun, Everysun, IQ, Island Tribe, Kool-A-Sun, Nivea, OnGuard, Pure & Protect, Reitzer Pure Sun, SkinKids, SunSkin, SPAR Sola, Mr Price Sundoctor, Sundrops, Clicks Sun Protect, Sunskweez, Pick n Pay Sun Sure, Sun Therapy, Techniblok, Tropitone, Vichy. See CANSA for more information.

Other sunscreens carrying the current CANSA Seal of Recognition (CSOR) will still help protect you from harmful ultraviolet radiation.

In addition to sunscreen use, avoid the sun between 10am and 3pm (some medical experts recommend between 9am and 4pm), especially during summer, and wear protective clothing such as broad-brimmed hats and long sleeves.
