when is the best time to excercise?

dear dietdoc,

i would like to know when would be the best time to do daily excercises, before or after a meal. i'm looking to firm up, and possibly loose a little weight. i was told that it's best to excercies before a meal to burn fat, but after a meal to build muscle. is this true? i usually only have time to excercise in the mornings and the afternoons. problem is do i do it defore or after breakfast and supper?

Dear CKT
It is up to you when you can exercise and how this best fits into your daily schedule. I doubt that the timing of exercise has any effect on burning fat or building muscles. If you do exercise in the morning then it is essential that you eat a light breakfast before your exercise because after a 12 hour fast since supper your blood sugar levels will be very low and you will not be able to exercise to full capacity. Eat some fruit, cereal and milk or yoghurt with coffee or tea. Use an energy drink during and after exercise and then have a second breakfast at about 10 am (wholewheat or rye sandwich with fruit). In the afternoons you need to have an energy snack (energy bar) before you exercise and also use an energy drink during and after exercise. Then have a light supper of pasta with tuna or cheese and salads afterwards.
Enjoy

I don't understand this doc's anwer. She recommends coffee/tea and about 3 energy drinks a day, plus a energy bar. If you had to follow a diet like that, your blood sugar levels will be playing havoc and come late afternoon, you will be exausted as all your adrenaline and sugar levels will be so low. This is a recipy to burn-out your adrenals super-fast. Also, having done alot of rechearch on the subject, if you want to lose wait, then yes, try train on an empty stomach, where the danger comes in is when your body starts breaking down muscle to use for energy, thus only do this when you have a bit of spare weight you want to shake, and stop doing it when the weight is off. Its also easier to firm up when you dont have too much body fat (below 23%). So maybe try working out on an empty stomach doing quite a bit of cardio (bike, swimming, treadmill) until you have shaken most of the weight (that is, if your body fat is higher than 23%), then after that, start sculpting and firming your body by having some protien and carbohydrates approx. 20 min. before a workout (your body will need to proteien to build/tone those muscles and use the carbohydrate for energy during your workout). And now you should also alternate between weights and cardio (dont do these on the same day = one day cardio, the next day weights), 25 minutes cardio is enough for one day and 45 minutes of weights, targetting upper or lower body on alternating days. Remember to stretch after every workout, as this will create those feminine, slender looking muscles.
Taking a good MultiVitamin (Solgar makes a good one called V2000 with lots of B-vitamins for energy) is also a good idea.

Hope you get this reply...
