What causes knee noise?

X rays indicate problems with both knees although only right knee troubling me. Pain in right knee and cannot decend stairs, get up or drive without pain. Knee does not like weight on it in bent position. Very painfull. Loud clicking noise emanating from right knee. A cartilage removed about 23 years ago. Is there something that can be done to ease the pain and what causes the clicks?

Theresa, it sounds like you have arthritis or a meniscus problem. The clicks are caused by the movement of uneven surfaces. The best would be to see an orthopaedic surgeon and have an arthroscopy done. With a bit of luck they will be able to fix the problem at the same time by just making the surfaces smooth again. Good luck.
