Our expert says:
Because children of 14 years, are still growing actively, it is recommended that they should be seen by a registered dietitian (visit the Association for Dietetics in SA Website at: www.adsa.org.za and click on "Find a Dietitian" to find a dietitian in your area) if they need to lose weight. The dietitian will work out an individual diet prescription for your son which ensures that he starts losing weight and but still continues with normal growth. International experts agree that physical activity is essential when children need to lose weight. You can arrange for him to participate in sport and ensure that he does at least 30 minutes of aerobic exercise every day (e.g. brisk walking, jogging, cycling, swimming, skipping, rowing). Encourage him to he as active as possible.
The average weight for 14-year-old boys is 45 kg, so he would need to lose at least 15 kg.
