Why is it dangerous to hold your breath while lifting weights?

Hi Charlene

The reason is that your blood pressure rises when you lift weights, and it is exaggerated if you lift against a very heavy resistance while holding your breath - think of it is a pressure valve, in a sense. that's why people with high blood pressure or people at risk for cardiac problems are not supposed to do strenuous weight training - the pressure increases so much it can cause a stroke.

Hi Charlene ,

I reckon it is linked to the fact that your blood pressure increases considerably when you lift weight and therefore to avert (unlikely ) side affects , it is not advisable to hold your breath . It depends also on your general health conditions ..
