Water on the lungs

My Dad (80) had pneumonia about eight months ago and a heart pacemaker about a month ago. He complained that he can't breath properly and were very short of breath. Today they drained 1.5l of liquid from his one lung. What causes this and how can it prevented from happening again.

Hallo Hennie
fluid on the lung can be caused by inflammation of the lung pleura, or due to lung cancer or due to heart failure
