genital warts are caused by HUman Papilloma Virus. If left for a long time and particularely if they are on a mucus menbrane, like the inside of the vagina, anus or head of the penis, can so damage the underlying tissue that it becomes cancerous. This is the biggest cause of cancer of the cervix and anus. The warts themselves are not infectious BUT are very friable ( brittle) and when subjected to friction ( as in having sex or just you fiddling with them) they break and leak serum. Thi serum is full of Papilloma virus and will likely create a new infection where ever this fluid lands- be that on you or your partner. the only way to get rid of this is to burn or freeze them off. It normally recquires that tis be done a few times as they tend to recur
