Heat packs (a hot facecloth will do), if you see a yellow area when you pull the flesh away from the nail, you can try to puncture the skin at that point - you won't feel anything as the skin will be dead there, but if it drains pus it will relieve the pain immediately ( or ask your GP to do this). You may need antibiotics per mouth but can also try bactroban ointment on the area.
