i would like to know what your thoughts are about systema. i live in joburg, and close to a place where this is offered but i would like to know if it is more of an art form, or if it can be used for self-defense.

thank you all for your input!

HI there,

Thank you for posting to our Self Defence forum. It is very difficult to comment on a specific style as it is not the style that makes it effective but the Instructor, his real world expierences and dynamic coaching methods. Any specific style/system can be taught as an art form, competitve form or real world street based form. You can even take a system like Western Boxing and teach it as an art form. You can take a system like Karate and adapt it to a street orientated SElf Defence system without all the rituals, belts and tradition. SO best is to go and check the classes out. Most South Africans have a pretty good idea of our crime situation in our country. If you feel the classes address these concerns and will prepare you to survive the streets of today then join and start training. Even if it is the worng choice you will benefit from it. Then do yourself a favor and start checking out other Self Defence schools and start attending any seminars that might be offered covering self defence aspects and you will soon start building up a knowledge base for your personal protection goals.
