Swimming head sensation

My mom's (62) BP, Bloodcount, Sugar levels are all ok, but get funny dizzy/spinning/swimming head sensations. Sometimes with a funny feeling in the head. It's accompanied by a strong hungry tummy feeling. Our GP and Physician finds nothing wrong. It's rather scary seeing my mom's at an age where strokes could be common.
What could it be?
What sort of tests van be done?

Dear MB
This can be due to an inner ear problem - it may be worth her while to have an ENT specialist opinion too.
