strange reaction

Our boerbull who is about 7 months old starting getting a very strange and quite sever rection to something unknown roundabout early December 2003. He's had it twice and so far we can tell he's about to get it because he makes a huge vomit before the reaction starts. His reaction is this: his body almost instantly is covered in bumps which itch terribly, he then throws himself down without looking where and he's almost injured himself badly, he can't stand the itching, then he starts to swell up around his face neck and ears and the swelling is intense. The vet told us he's either reacting to a change of diet or an insect bite/sting, but neither of these options is possible because we havent changed his diet and both times he'll have been lying quietly with no bugs around him. After his first attack we got antibiotics from the vet which helped the second time-the swelling wasn't as bad but the itching was still the same. Do you know of anything it could possibly be? Our biggest fear at the moment is that it happens when no-ones at home.

It could be caused by virtually anything around him, anything to which he is allergic. This includes insect bites, food, and his environment. Unfortunately, we seldom find out exactly what causes these reactions, luckily they treat successfully. I'm afraid I cannot be of any more help or be more specific.
